An urban neighbourhood within the Historic Heart of Perth, Cathedral Square is one of Perth’s major CBD blocks encompassing the State Buildings, Perth Town Hall, St George’s Cathedral, The Deanery, the State Administrative Tribunal building, the City of Perth Library and the David Malcolm Justice Centre.

Challenge

Align a diverse stakeholder group and develop a project pathway to deliver economically, socially and culturally to the neighbourhood.

Opportunity

Unearth the place proposition and establish an ownable place framework to elevate the Cathedral Square experience.

Outcome

Shared stakeholder priorities were established to guide strategic and operational place objectives. Insights identified five key place pillars which informed the curatorial framework to govern future place activity and investment.

Delivering highly curated and well considered creative placemaking solutions, the Placemaking Strategy for Cathedral Square encourages connection, engagement, participation and recognition.

Attracting diverse audience groups and creating memorable moments and place connections, the annual place activation program has brought Arts and Culture to the forefront of the Cathedral Square experience.

Placemaking outcomes have informed several capital works projects - continuing to improve sociability and usability within the precinct and delivering economic return for project stakeholders.
